Mineral Exploration

Mineral Exploration is a process of discovery of unknown mineral resources to findout commercially viable mineral deposits. Mineral Exploration is a much intensive, organized and professional form of mineral prospecting. A near accurate estimation on the volume of mineral deposits is established through exploration.

Back ground Information

Department has carried out extensive exploration in the State and has established Limestone, Lignite, Bauxite, Chalk, Silicasand, Fireclay, Bentonite, Granite deposits in the State. Remote Sensing Survey, Pre- Detailed Mineral Survey, Detailed Mineral Survey and Drilling explorations have established the mineral wealth in the State. By such surveys, total 692 reports are published by department. The area covered by exploration in the State is shown below.

Total Area of Gujarat State

1,96,024=00 Sq.Km

Mineral Bearing Area

1,27,000=00 Sq.Km

Area Covered by Pre-Detailed Mineral Survey Scheme

49037 = 00 Sq.Km

Area Covered by Remote Sensing

61169 = 00 Sq.Km

Area Covered by Detailed Mineral Survey Scheme

8463 = 844 Sq.Km

Area Covered by Drilling

3645.162 Sq.Km

Total Meterage Drilling by CGM

3,58,262 = 00 mtrs

A number of mineral based industries such as cement, soda ash, ceramic units, glass units and Lignite based thermal power stations are in existence in the State as a result of explorations.

Looking to the increasing demand of various minerals in the State and to cater the requirement to the industries, exploration by out- sourcing started in 1998. Good deposits of Lignite, Limestone, Bauxite, Chinaclay etc are established through drilling by out sourcing. By out sourcing nearly 2,30,716mts drilling is done.

Present Scenario

After introduction of new MMDR act (A) 2015 and Mineral (Evidence of Mineral Content) Rules – 2015, Department has started mineral exploration as per the norms fixed for auction by IBM. By extensive exploration, eight blocks of Limestone are prepared for auction and exploration is continued in Limestone , Bauxite, Lignite bearing areas in the State.

Department is also engaged in the latest technique of the exploration by Geo- Chemical mapping. This project is taken up with technical guidance from Geological Survey of India. Geo-Chemical mapping is a technique developed to give information on the spatial distribution of chemical elements and compounds data base of the State using multi – elemental analyses. In the first phase, sample collection for Geo chemical exploration of Kachchh is completed and four reports are published. In the second phase, sample collection from other parts of the State is under progress. The status of Geo-Chemical exploration is shown below.
